The Four Types of Face Shapes
While each person and face is beautifully unique we can all fall into one of these four face shape categories. Most hatters call these shapes:
Diamond, Oblong, Round, and Square.
Each of these categories have particular hat styles that highlight the best features of your face and give you that stunning and elegant look.
Diamond Faces
The diamond or triangle face shape is typically defined by these characteristics:
- Cheekbones being the widest point of the face
- A highly angular face
- Narrow forehead and tapered chin
For those gifted with a diamond shaped face we would suggest hats with a defined structural silhouette with a moderate brim with a pinched crown detail. We would suggest the Gilly, the Caroline, and the Bella for a feminine look. For a masculine look we would suggest the Pana-Mate Fedora, the Clarke, and the Reef Pana-Mate.
Oblong Faces
The oblong face shape tends to be defined by these features:
- Face is longer than it is wide
- The lines from temple to jaw are fairly straight due to less angular cheek bones
- A round chin
For those lucky to have an oblong shaped face we would suggest hats with a flared brim such as wide brimmed fedoras, and other wide brimmed hat. We would suggest the Braided Fedora, Traveller, Diane and the Oscar.
Round Faces
The round face shape tends to be defined by these features:
- Face is about as wide as it is long
- Wide forehead
- Full cheeks
- Rounded chin
For those gifted with round faces we would suggest hats with a high crown and a shorter brim, like a trilby, as well as bucket or cloche shapes. We would suggest the Gatsby, Avoca Fedora, Traveller, and the Anna Bucket for a softer feminine look. We would also suggest the Harley Trilby, the Stevie, and the Roxy for rounder faced ladies and gents.
Square Faces
The square face shape tends to be defined by these features:
- Face has a strong jawline
- Wide forehead
- Wide cheekbones
For the lucky people with a squarer face we would suggest hats with gentle rounder lines. Hats with softer silhouettes with floppy brims will be the perfect complement to a square face. For a feminine look we would suggest the Monroe Capeline, Kiera and the Breton. All Capeline styles are perfect for the squares. We would suggest the Scrunchie for the ultimate summery beach look.
